You may park in the “library/town hall” lot, along Main Street north of the intersection of Main Street/28N. On 28N, you may park on either side of the road so long as you are not in the street and pulled off on the shoulder of the road. You may also park in the grass lot on the corner of Main Street/28N - this is private property, but we have temporary permission to use this lot.
The Adirondack Mountains’ “storied” performance group Gem Radio Theatre will perform its own version of Teddy Roosevelt’s Wild Ride to the Presidency.
In September of 1901, an event of historical prominence took place in the Adirondack Mountain towns of North Creek, Minerva, and Newcomb. While Vice-President Theodore Roosevelt was vacationing with his family in Tahawus, President William McKinley was shot by an assassin at an Exposition in Buffalo. After a short visit to Buffalo where the President appeared to be recovering, the Vice-President returned to continue his vacation in the mountains.
A decline in McKinley’s injury made it imperative that Roosevelt return to Buffalo at once. His location and the communication available at that time made it difficult for the information to reach Roosevelt in a timely manner, resulting in a midnight race during a wild and stormy night to get him to the North Creek Train Station.
Gem Radio Theatre will present “Teddy Roosevelt’s Wild Ride to the Presidency” at a public performance on Thursday, September 17, 7 pm, at Tannery Pond Center. This original radio play, commissioned by the North Creek Depot to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of that fateful ride, will be told by actors in period dress, recreating the story written by Heloise Cronin Murphy, daughter of Mike Cronin, the third driver who delivered Roosevelt safely to the depot to take the train to Buffalo. Sound effects will enhance this exciting story, accompanied by a slide show of photographs of the actual people and places of the time.
The Gem Radio Theatre, centered in the Town of Johnsburg, Warren County, in the Adirondack Mountains, has presented several plays in many venues in recent years, including The Great Adirondack Stagecoach Robbery, The Lone Ranger Rides Again, The African Queen, It’s a Wonderful Life, Horrors You Can Hear, and Christmas With Fibber McGee and Molly. Other past projects include murder mystery plays, “History Tea” presentations, and graveyard walks with actors portraying local historical figures at their gravesites. Gem Radio Theatre ensemble actresses and actors are all Adirondack residents – a truly “All Adirondack Theatre Group.”
