Annie Rosen - Lead Vocals
Annie Rosen grew up on the south side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This area was rich with the culture of immigrants from Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Eastern Europe. Her own family had emigrated from Slovenia and both of her parents played the accordion. Annie and her five siblings grew up in the culturally rich South Side of Milwaukee and were exposed to all kinds of music including Eastern European, Middle Eastern, Latin, and contemporary American music. Annie always loved to sing and joined a Serbian dance group as a teen.
Coming of age in the 1960’s and 70’s, she was exposed to the emergence of rock and roll and the folk revival. One of her sister Louise’s best friends was Penny Fox, and Penny and her husband Dave were mainstays in the Milwaukee Folk Music Society. It was during this period that Annie was exposed to traditional blues guitar playing and singing. She soon was recognized as a standout singer and formed a trio that performed jug band, vaudevillian blues, and old timey music. She played some stand up bass and would throw in some Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan.
Her musical partnership with husband Jonny dates back to 1983. They were part of the electric quartet, “Center Street Blues Band”, and performed extensively as a duo throughout Wisconsin. When visiting Jonny’s father Sam, he would always play his old 78 rpm records spanning from Leadbelly and Big Bill Broonzy to Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday which was a great source of musical inspiration.
Today Annie is recognized as a premier interpreter of the great female blues and jazz artists of the 1920’s-40’s as well as adept at multiple musical genres. When asked what inspires her musically she said, “it’s all about the raw emotion and rhythm."
Jonny Rosen - Guitar & Vocals
Jonny grew up in a musical family. His father Sam had a booming rich baritone and he loved to sing and play blues and jazz standards on the piano, baritone uke, and tenor banjo. Although, he wasn’t an accomplished musician, he was a serious collector of jazz, blues, and folk recordings. Jonny has inherited his dad’s 78 rpm collection. It was this exposure to roots music that inspired Jonny when he came of age in the 1960’s to pick up the acoustic guitar and try to mimic Josh White’s “One Meatball” and “Outskirts of Town”.
Jonny has always performed music in the context of his involvement in the labor and other social movements. When he met Annie in the early 1980’s they were involved in the Milwaukee Folk Music Society, where Jonny learned the alternating bass style of finger picking studying Doc Watson, Mississippi John Hurt, and others.
Every holiday ended up a hootenanny with Jonny’s mother’s brothers Arnold and Sammy leading the way singing songs of Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly, and others. In fact, these two uncles helped to write “Charlie and the MTA” when they were part of the “People’s Singers of Boston” in support of the Progressive Party Candidate, Walter O’Brien.
Jonny further developed his guitar playing under the tutelage of expert guitarists associated with the Pick’n’ & Sing’n’ Gather’n’ folk organization when he and Annie moved to New York’s Capital District in 1990. This enabled him to expand his musical acumen to include old time blues, jazz, swing, folk, and old timey music.
Peter Davis - Clarinet, Tenor Guitar, Piano & Vocals
Peter Davis showed an early gift for music—his parents recall that at just one year old, he could hum arias from Rigolettoin tune as they listened to operas on their hi-fi. By age five, he was taking piano lessons from an acclaimed teacher, but was quickly “fired” for playing pieces by ear instead of reading the notes. At eight, he began five years of clarinet lessons, culminating in a performance of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto. In 8th grade, he was handed a saxophone in band class, discovered the 12-bar blues, and fell for Elvis Presley. Within a year, he was playing rock and roll in bars with older musicians around Babylon, Long Island. His father encouraged his talents, buying him a Selmer saxophone and Gibson guitar and giving him chord/melody guitar lessons on jazz standards.
Concerned about the bar scene, his parents sent him to a Quaker boarding school in 10th grade, where Peter’s musical world expanded to include political folk, Bach, Thelonious Monk, Mississippi John Hurt, and Earl Scruggs. At SUNY Binghamton, he minored in music, performed in jug and bluegrass bands, sang in doo-wop and madrigal groups, acted in plays, played reeds in pit orchestras, and even studied music theory with John Cage.
Peter spent three years in Malawi, Central Africa, where he directed a school a cappella group and played South African Zulu jive with students. Today, he lives in Saratoga Springs, New York, with his “amazingly musician-tolerant” wife Beverly, performing with at least seven bands and serving as program director for both the Flurry Festival and Saratoga Racecourse.
A multi-instrumentalist, Peter plays clarinet, alto sax, 5-string and tenor banjo, piano, guitar, mandolin, whistle, and more, moving intuitively across traditional folk, blues, vintage pop, and jazz styles. With Annie & the Hedonists, he plays tenor guitar, piano, and clarinet, and also sings. His other projects include the Whippersnappers (eclectic string band), Reggie’s Red Hot Feetwarmers (house dixieland band at Saratoga Racecourse, with a 2011 residency in Shanghai), Peter, Paul & George (elementary school music residencies), Lindy Hop Heaven (swing dance band), and The Clayfoot Strutters (rocked-out contra dance band from Vermont).
Peter also performs with Jay Ungar and Molly Mason for their radio program Dancing on the Air, at festivals, and on recordings such as The Lover’s Waltz and Relax Your Mind. He appeared with them on numerous episodes of A Prairie Home Companion in the 1990s. Earlier in his career, he toured internationally as part of the backup band for John Phillips and The Mamas & The Papas.
Don Young - Upright Bass & Vocals
Donald Young is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who grew up surrounded by music. His grandfather was a big band leader in the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s; his mother played trumpet in the Navy WAVES orchestra; and his brother is a professional drummer in Nashville.
A professional musician for more than thirty years, Don is a master of many styles, including swing, rock, country, jazz, folk, Celtic, Hawaiian, Dixieland, and children’s music. His versatility extends across a remarkable range of instruments: acoustic and electric guitar, upright and electric bass, ukulele, tenor banjo, tenor guitar, mandolin, and the rare guit-organ (yes—it’s exactly what it sounds like: a guitar with built-in organ capabilities).
Don’s career has taken him to the stage with an impressive list of artists, including Randy Travis, Commander Cody, The Drifters, The Coasters, and The Platters. Since 2008, he has also served as Musical Director for the Spotlighter’s Theatre Troupe in Malta, NY.
Jerry Marotta - Drums
Jerry Marotta is an acclaimed drummer, percussionist, producer, and arranger whose career has spanned more than four decades and an extraordinary range of musical styles. He is best known for his work with Peter Gabriel (playing on four of Gabriel’s groundbreaking albums and tours), Hall & Oates, Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, Indigo Girls, Sarah McLachlan, and John Mayer, among many others. His versatility and creativity have made him one of the most sought-after drummers in the industry, with credits that stretch across rock, pop, folk, and world music.
In addition to his live and studio work, Jerry is the owner of Dreamland Recording Studios in Woodstock, NY, a historic space where he has produced and recorded a wide variety of artists. Over the years, he has brought his distinctive groove and musical sensibility to countless albums and tours, always serving the song and elevating the performance.
With Annie & the Hedonists, Jerry adds his signature rhythmic style, deep experience, and infectious energy to the band’s spirited blend of Americana roots, swing, blues, and jazz—helping bring vintage songs and timeless traditions to life in fresh and exciting ways.
