Kate received a 2025 Individual Artist’s Grant for the new body of mosaic pieces she’ll create!
This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council.
Artist Statement: “As an artist, I have always found inspiration in close observation of the natural world, and in the ever-changing play of light and shadow over organic forms. Through my art, I seek to convey a sense of visual poetry.”
Kate Hartley
Kate Hartley moved to the North Creek area in the Adirondacks over twenty years ago, from her long-time home of Burlington, Vermont. She has created, exhibited and taught art for forty years, with watercolors and mosaics as her specialties.
Her artwork centers on capturing the beauty of nature…the light through a snowy forest, a recumbent hill, or a misty morning at the lake’s edge.
Kate loves to travel, and first fell in love with mosaics in Barcelona, where Gaudi decorated magical buildings and rooftops with broken bits of glazed pottery. Back in Vermont, she led a group of 100 students,
who made a stepping stone path through the school’s flower garden.
Fifteen years ago, she began the North Creek Mosaic Project, as a vehicle for combining art and teaching.
Over 2000 people joined her in adding elements to our huge community mural (look for it on Facebook, or www.visitnorthcreek.com). Another 20,000 people were convinced to add one tile, as they wandered by…
Kate describes “the most exciting aspect of the North Creek Mosaic Mural is the energy it contains – of the people of all ages who took the time to add elements to the wall. Almost every detail is by a different ‘artist’. My challenge was to weave it all together into a cohesive vision of the recreation and nature, here in our Adirondacks.”
Kate also loves painting in watercolors, and owns the H’ART Studio & Galllery, (276 Main St. in North Creek, NY), where she offers creative classes for all ages. She also shares her talents through visual art classes and workshops at the Queensbury Senior Center, Johnsburg Youth Committee, LARAC, Ti Arts and the Adirondack Folk School.
